Qorchat

End-to-end encrypted messenger

Private messages, no phone number required.

An end-to-end encrypted messenger. Messages are encrypted on the device that writes them and decrypted on the device that reads them; the relay that carries them cannot read them.

  • Encrypted between devices
  • Username and passcode, no number
  • Nothing tracked on this site

End-to-end encrypted

Conversations, attachments, calls and group messages are encrypted between devices. The relay cannot read them.

No phone number required

An account is a username and a passcode. A number is optional, and can be removed at any time from inside the app.

What Qorchat is

Encrypted on one device, decrypted on the other.

Qorchat is a messaging app for phones. Conversations, attachments, calls and group messages are end-to-end encrypted. The service that relays messages between devices stores what it must to deliver them and no more: it does not hold the keys that would let it read a conversation.

An account is made with a username and a passcode. A phone number is not required to sign up, is not required to use Qorchat, and can be removed at any time from inside the app.

What Qorchat uses text messages for

Two reasons for a text. Both begin with you asking.

Text messages (SMS) are used for exactly two things, and only when the person using the app asks for them:

  • Verifying a phone number you chose to add. A six-digit code is sent to the number so the app can confirm the number is yours.
  • Account recovery. A six-digit code that helps you back into your own account when you no longer have your passcode.

Text messages are never used to carry chat messages, and never used for marketing, offers, newsletters or any other promotion. Your conversations do not travel by SMS; they travel end-to-end encrypted between devices.

Adding a phone number is optional. Signing up and using Qorchat without one is fully supported, and a recovery code you write down does the same job as a text for getting back into your account. The SMS terms set out the message frequency, the costs your own carrier may charge, and how to stop the messages.

Where a phone number goes

Told plainly, because a code cannot reach a handset without it.

If you choose to add one, the number is sent to our SMS delivery provider, Amazon Web Services, and from there to mobile carriers, so that the code can reach your handset. They see the number in order to deliver the message. Our own service stores a keyed one-way hash of the number rather than the number itself. The privacy policy says exactly what is stored and for how long.

Four pages, and nothing watching you read them.
